Which Math class should I take? (Guided Self-Placement for Math)

All students at Columbia College are permitted to enroll directly in introductory transfer-level Mathematics courses, including MATH 2-Statistics, MATH 4-Mathematics for Elementary Teachers, MATH 6-Mathematics for Liberal Arts (sometimes called General Education Mathematics), MATH 8-Trigonometry, and MATH 12-Finite Mathematics.

The college also offers a support course, Math 122, that students can take alongside Math 2-Statistics to receive additional time with their instructor and help on important skills.

Students who have met the prerequisites may also enroll in higher-level calculus track classes such as MATH 16-Precalculus and the calculus courses, MATH 18A, B, or C, or beyond.

This Guided Self-Placement serves three important roles for you:

  1. By completing it, the registration system will permit you to enroll in a transfer-level mathematics course.

  2. You will learn whether statistics is recommended for your major.

  3. If so, you will learn whether enrolling in Math 122-Support for Statistics is recommended for your particular learning situation.

The mathematics you will need to be successful in college and in your career varies considerably based on your Program of Study (aka 'major'). Columbia College offers at least one math class for each Program of Study. Our counselors are standing by to assist you in deciding which math course is best for you. Call (209) 588-5109 to make an appointment with a counselor, email the Counseling office (cccounseling@yosemite.edu), or visit the Counseling webpage for more information.

Before you begin, visit our Programs of Study webpage and find your Area of Interest (also called your Program of Study). You will need this information in this Guided Self-Placement.
